About

Mr Sherif Shaarawy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal (VR) Surgeon specialising in the medical and surgical management of complex retinal and vitreous conditions. Alongside VR surgery, he performs high-volume cataract surgery, including complex cataract cases, with a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and visual outcomes.

Mr Shaarawy graduated in medicine from Alexandria, Egypt, and subsequently pursued advanced ophthalmic training and subspecialty fellowship experience in the UK. This included fellowship training at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) and at the Royal Free Hospital in London, where he developed expertise in complex retinal disease, advanced surgical decision-making, and multidisciplinary care.

He has worked as a consultant ophthalmologist within major UK services, including a consultant post at King’s College Hospital (Sidcup) and a dedicated vitreoretinal consultant role in Carlisle.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Shaarawy has contributed to innovation and academic activity within retinal care, including involvement in developments in ophthalmic gene therapy and work relating to hypersonic vitrectomy. His approach combines technical excellence with clear communication and careful follow-up, aiming to achieve the safest surgery and the best possible visual outcomes.
