About
Mr Osama Makhzoum is a highly accomplished Ophthalmic Surgeon practicing at Freedom Vision Telford. He holds an MD from Aleppo University, Syria (1991), followed by an MSc in Ophthalmology from Aleppo University (1998). He was awarded FRCS (Ophthalmology) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2002 and MRCOphth from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK in 2013.
He completed a Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre, UK (2010–2011), further advancing his expertise in complex retinal conditions.
With over 30 years of experience in ophthalmology, Mr Makhzoum specialises in high-volume cataract surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, glaucoma management, and oculoplastic surgery. His clinical interests include small-incision cataract surgery, retinal detachment repair, vitreoretinal procedures for macular holes, epiretinal membranes and diabetic retinopathy, laser treatment for glaucoma and post-cataract capsule opacification, as well as selected oculoplastic procedures.
Mr Makhzoum has performed over 18,000 cataract surgeries, maintaining an exceptionally low posterior capsule rupture rate of less than 0.2%. He is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon with extensive experience managing complex and high-risk ophthalmic cases.
In addition to his surgical practice, he is a dedicated trainer and mentor for new doctors in cataract surgery, supporting the development of safe and proficient surgical techniques. He is known for his meticulous surgical approach, calm and reassuring manner, and commitment to achieving the best possible visual outcomes for his patients.
Mr Makhzoum is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (UK), the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons, EURETINA, the Medical Defence Union, and the British Syrian Medical Association.
