About
Mr Paul Chua is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Lead Vitreoretinal Surgeon at St Paul’s Eye Unit, Liverpool, and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. He cares for adults and children with a wide range of vitreoretinal conditions, offering expert diagnosis and advanced surgical treatment in two of the region’s leading eye centres.
He completed his medical and ophthalmic training in Scotland and went on to undertake two specialised vitreoretinal surgery fellowships in Edinburgh and Liverpool, gaining extensive experience in the management of complex retinal disease.
Mr Chua performs both routine and complex cataract surgery, carrying out over 1,000 cataract operations each year with a complication rate lower than the national average, reflecting his focus on safety and excellent visual outcomes. He also has special expertise in retinal and macular surgery, scleral‑fixed intraocular lens implantation, and paediatric vitreoretinal surgery.
He is passionate about teaching and regularly trains and mentors vitreoretinal surgeons from the UK and around the world, including Italy, Greece, and Australia.
