About
Mr Zaid Shalchi is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the NHS and private practice. He was previously an Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
His subspecialty interests are cataract surgery with premium intraocular lenses and retinal disease. Mr Shalchi graduated with double distinction from King’s College London School of Medicine.
He completed his residency at St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals before undertaking fellowship training in medical retina, uveitis and complex cataract surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Retina tutor for the London Eye Course.
He is a keen surgical teacher as part of the Skills Faculty of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as well as training ophthalmologists at an international level at the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the European Society for Retina Specialists (Euretina). Mr Shalchi takes great pride in providing high-quality patient-centred care in an efficient and timely manner at Freedom Vision Bedford.

Follow signs towards Bedford Heights on Manton Lane
You can access the Bedford Heights complex from:
Manton Lane via the A6 (Clapham Road), or
Brickhill Drive via Kimbolton Road or Linnet Way
Enter Bedford Heights via the Brickhill Drive entrance
Once inside the complex, take the first left, following the signs for Freedom Vision
A dedicated patient car park is available immediately on your left. Parking is free for patients
By Train
Travel to Bedford Railway Station
Exit the station onto Ashburnham Road
The clinic is approximately 1.3 miles from the station (around a 30-minute walk or 5–10 minutes by taxi)
If walking:
Head north from the station towards the town centre
Continue towards Manton Lane and follow signs for Bedford Heights
Enter the Bedford Heights complex via the Brickhill Drive entrance
Freedom Vision is located on the ground floor, just inside the complex
By Bus
Several local bus services stop on Brickhill Drive, directly outside Bedford Heights.
The 6 and 20 bus services stop at the nearest bus stop
Alight at the Brickhill Drive stop
Cross into the Bedford Heights complex via the main entrance
Freedom Vision is approximately a one-minute walk from the bus stop, with clear signage directing you to the clinic
