About

Mr Sherif Shaarawy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal (VR) Surgeon specialising in the medical and surgical management of complex retinal and vitreous conditions. Alongside VR surgery, he performs high-volume cataract surgery, including complex cataract cases, with a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and visual outcomes.

Mr Shaarawy graduated in medicine from Alexandria, Egypt, and subsequently pursued advanced ophthalmic training and subspecialty fellowship experience in the UK. This included fellowship training at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) and at the Royal Free Hospital in London, where he developed expertise in complex retinal disease, advanced surgical decision-making, and multidisciplinary care.

He has worked as a consultant ophthalmologist within major UK services, including a consultant post at King’s College Hospital (Sidcup) and a dedicated vitreoretinal consultant role in Carlisle.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Shaarawy has contributed to innovation and academic activity within retinal care, including involvement in developments in ophthalmic gene therapy and work relating to hypersonic vitrectomy. His approach combines technical excellence with clear communication and careful follow-up, aiming to achieve the safest surgery and the best possible visual outcomes.

How to find Freedom Vision Carlisle 

Travelling by Car 

Travelling via M6 

  1. Enter CA2 7AF into your sat nav or preferred navigation app 
  2. If travelling from the M6, leave at Junction 44 
  3. Follow the bypass and look for signs towards Cumberland Infirmary 
  4. Continue towards the Cumberland Infirmary 
  5. Freedom Vision is located on Port Road, approximately two streets from the infirmary 
  6. The clinic is on the right-hand side of Port Road 
  7. Free patient parking is available directly outside the building 
  8. Freedom Vision is located on the third floor. Follow the signs inside the building 

From Carlisle city centre 

  1. Travel west through the city centre, following signs for Cumberland Infirmary 
  2. Continue past Carlisle Castle 
  3. At the roundabout at Caldewgate, take the last exit onto Newtown Road 
  4. Take the first right onto Port Road 
  5. Continue along Port Road. Freedom Vision will be on your right-hand side 
  6. Free patient parking is available directly outside the building 

 

Travelling by Train 

  1. Travel to Carlisle Railway Station on Court Square 
  2. Exit the station and make your way towards Carlisle city centre 
  3. Freedom Vision is approximately 1.5 miles from Carlisle Railway Station 
  4. A taxi is the easiest option if you do not want to walk 
  5. Ask your taxi driver for Minerva House, Port Road, near Cumberland Infirmary 
  6. If walking, follow signs towards Cumberland Infirmary and then continue towards Port Road 
  7. Once you arrive at Minerva House, enter the building and follow the signs to Freedom Vision on the third floor 

 

Travelling by Bus 

  1. Take the number 61 bus towards Morton Park 
  2. Alight at the McVitie’s bus stop 
  3. Freedom Vision is approximately a 9-minute walk from the bus stop 
  4. After getting off the bus, continue along the road and take the second exit at the roundabout 
  5. Take the next right 
  6. Continue along the road until you see Freedom Vision on your right-hand side 
  7. Enter Minerva House and follow the signs to the third floor
