Some of the things we do might seem unnecessary to other specialists, such as having our own team of dedicated anaesthetists. Or providing our cataract patients with lubricating eye drops for improved diagnostics. Or even ensuring you are always offered a private room on the day of your operation. About

Andrew is one of the UK’s most respected eye surgeons. He has more than 35 years’ experience in ophthalmology, with more than 15,000 vitrectomy procedures his name, and in excess of 25,000 cataract or refractive lens procedures.

Andrew began his career in general surgery, having trained in medicine first at Oxford University and then at Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London. He made the move into ophthalmology in 1988, training at Southampton’s highly regarded General Hospital and the world famous Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. The late 1980s was an exciting time for ophthalmology; eye surgery was experiencing huge leaps forward, from improved optics and micro-instrumentation to breakthrough cataract and macular treatments.

Andrew’s work has tracked many of those advances. He was one of the first British surgeons to use intravitreal injections (where medicines are injected into the vitreous of the eye to treat conditions like age-related macular degeneration or AMD). He remains an enthusiastic proponent of new technologies, such as the exciting Red Light Therapy for AMD.

As a high-volume surgeon who specialises in retinal and cataract surgery, Andrew is often asked to take on complex cases by colleagues. This includes issues like implant lens exchanges, ocular trauma, and eyes that have had difficult first procedures.

During his time in the NHS, he served as Clinical Service Director at Southampton General, playing a key role in establishing the Chair of Ophthalmology there. He continues to act as a reviewer for grant applications and lectures regularly to Optometrists and general practitioners. He now works full-time in the private sector.

  2. Follow the M3 and leave at Junction 12, following signs for Eastleigh / Chandlers Ford (A335)
  3. At the roundabout, follow signs towards Chandlers Ford
  4. Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital is located on Winchester Road and is clearly signposted from the main road
  5. Free on-site parking is available for patients and visitors
  6. Please remember to register your vehicle registration number at reception when you arrive, as the hospital operates a parking management system
  7. Sapphire Eye Clinic is located within Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital. Please report to reception on arrival

Travelling by Train

  1. Travel to Chandlers Ford Railway Station
  2. Exit the station onto Station Lane
  3. The clinic is approximately 1 mile from the station
  4. A taxi journey takes around 5 minutes, while walking takes approximately 20 minutes
  5. If walking, head south along Winchester Road. Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital will be on your right

Travelling by Bus

  1. Take the Bluestar 1 bus service, which operates between Southampton, Chandlers Ford and Winchester
  2. Alight at the stop closest to Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital
  3. The hospital is approximately a 5-minute walk from the bus stop
  4. Enter through the main hospital entrance and report to reception for your appointment
